HA:
I'm not sure this script would work for Steve Dunlap (as indicated in the subject line)-LOL
I'm working on revising it to better fit myself considering our conversations about IM.
I've attached two files showing the revisions I'm requesting for my web profile and resume (same changes to both). The changes are to just the title and first sentence, as indicated by Tracked changes being turned on in the Word documents. The cover letter we've used need not be changed at this point but believe it will change in the coming months after we finalize our approach to IM.
I need another day or two to draft the calling script changes.
Also, I'll send you and Steve separate emails on the isciencedvd ideas and introduction between Steve and myself.
Let me know what I can do to facilitate putting the attached changes into production.
Forwarded docs to Julie for corrections to published information.

I was playing around in IDExec (only way to learn!) and thought I would pull a list of Chief Development Officers, irrespective of where they happen to be. CDO titles rarely show up outside of the non-profit sector, so by working backwards, I thought you might be able to identify some targets in this area of interest and at the same time have the contact name of someone that HAS to be well connected to the marketplace. Let me know what you think.

This is excellent. I took a look at it and like what I see. However, I'm going to hold posting my information until I finish negotiating with CEO Advantage (www.ceoadvanatge.com). Tammy ad I just had a long discussion about working with them on becoming an affiliate (and licensee) last night. I am also working with some of their partners which run CEO and Entrepreneur forums (just attended one yesterday). There seems to be a great demand for my and Tammy's skills which will allow us to work locally and together (for a change!) We already have meeting with one of the executives from the affiliation next week. We should know our direction within a few weeks. I'll keep you posted when things become more clear.
Hope things are going well for you and the family!
WT:
Thanks for the update. Sounds exciting and very promising! Being able to work together is certainly a bonus that not a lot of people can enjoy. Keep me posted, and let me know if there is anything that I can do to be of service.

UPdate with Howard:
Chaosity growing with Howard working in the background to support Tammy's work in consulting in business.
Forming associations with business coaches; no real link between the coaching level and the implementation level (Tammy's work); interim need an open area of opportunity that Howard continues to pursue.
Also working in "consultative" role to help with key decision making that drives not only the outcome, but the fundamental identification of what the outcome should be.

One of my clients, Paul Lakin, belongs to the Turnaround Management Association which is engaged in, among other things, identifying interim executive within client companies. I thought that with your particular focus being interim management opportunities, it might be worthwhile to have a conversation with Paul.
Paul's background is in IT (see http://www.webprofile.info/plakin/ for more information) and he, in turn, might be an excellent resource for some of the things you run across.

To Howard, Steven, Chuck and Fred:
When you have a moment, I would like your thoughts on Gary's business model and if participating with him as individuals (Steven and Howard) would be of value for your personal campaign strategies as well as whether you all see his program blending into what SC&C is doing (or is there a better model that comes to mind? - Howard, you have done the research on this so I defer to your insights) as an extension of it's business platform.
His point regarding SEC reporting issues for senior executives is well taken; perhaps there is a much broader market to be developed, however, in privately held companies. I look forward to your feedback.
Thanks!

Sent following to Gary Gary Mollere re interim executive placement:
Hi Gary...
Jon Lidz was kind enough to suggest that we have a conversation. Let me give you a bit of background on how this subject came up:
I am a communications strategist and executive coach under contract with Stewart Cooper & Coon (www.stewartcoopercoon.com). In this capacity, I work with senior-level clients all over the country, some of whom have very unusual objectives that do not fit in the traditional employment mold. As part of our discussions, it became apparent that the "interim CEO" niche is a very viable fit for them (Jon included), but there did not seem to be anyone out there that had the marketing power to move the idea and the people into the hands of those who might need it most.
From our initial discussions, the idea was broached by one of these clients (Howard Adams) to look at the interim executive placement market as a logical extension of our work at SC&C. Doing so might allow SC&C to leverage the recruiting work we do as well as the multi-channel marketing strategies we employ to help our executives with their career search such that we might develop another service offering that would generate addition revenue opportunities and benefit a number of stakeholders. What Jon suggested was that rather than reinvent the wheel, we should speak to you about what may be possible in terms of how we might assist on another in this area. Jon was very complimentary of you, and that means a lot to us!
This topic (interim executive placement) is very new to us, and discussions are in preliminary stages only, but I personally think the interim executive placement market has a lot of merit, and I would like to get your input on if/how we might develop a working relationship, if it makes sense for everyone.
The key players in these discussions (to whom I will cc this email) have been myself (sort of the impromptu coordinator/facilitator), SC&C's partners (Fred & Alcyone Coon, and Chuck McConnell), and now three clients:
Steven Dunlap (http://www.webprofile.info/sdunlap/)
Howard Adams (http://www.webprofile.info/hadams/)
Jon Lidz (http://www.webprofile.info/jlidz/)
Please visit the SC&C web site and take a look at what we do, and visit the "Webfolio" TM links for the clients. I will ask that our informal team members take a look at your site (http://interimceo247.com/default.aspx) to get some background on what you are doing and then we will see when you and I can arrange a conversation.
Let me know what you think, Gary. I look forward to exploring the possibilities!

HA:
Thank you for the comments. I agree I should be doing the selling, they should simply be piquing the interest in me being contacted. I think the question remains, what exactly are we piquing their interest in, Howard or IM?
Two related questions to help me better understand where your coming from. First, Who are the callers talking to, the recruiters or the recruiter's staff? . Second, what is the model for SCC's profits?
In order to integrate IM into SCC as a profit maker I need to have some pretense of where SCC and the recruiters it works with (fills positions thru) obtain their revenues. Specifically, from the job seeker, referrals from fellow recruiters filling a position, the company hiring, combination of these, etc. For the initial proposal/plan I don't need exact numbers just a general idea.
I'll contact Tory in the coming week to discuss their vision and capabilities. No worries about professional advice from me, that is free. What typically hampers these endeavors is a lack of time due to making a living elsewhere (i.e., few can afford to risk so much on a single idea). I imagine they enjoyed the work at making the DVD's knowing the difference it makes to kids (and society). Yet are not so hot on making the business work, a separate set of skills and tasks. One can work at getting funding and have a business manager paid out of that funding, run it themselves, or sell the idea off to someone. All take many hours and failures before succeeding.
WT:
First and foremost, we are peaking their interest in you, second in the capacity of interim management. Promoting the IM point alone does not lead to conversations with you and you will make a far better spokesperson for the concept than our callers ever will be - at least at this point.
Normally, the callers are trying to get to the hiring managers for presentation of a client's credentials. In your case, it is very different because you are targeting intermediaries - people who are not likely in a position to hire you directly, but who may run across situations where an interim executive solution would benefit their client companies, and/or open up a potential revenue area that the recruiter did not have access to before (the latter case would probably require talking to owners/ managing partners of the recruiting firms to pursue some sort of partnering relationship that would make their involvement economically worth the effort to engage in the first place). The caller's job, in either case, is to raise your visibility, increase awareness of what you do, and lay the foundation for your follow up with the targeted person at some point in the future.
Regarding the economics, at least related to the calling program, we pay our callers based on the number of calls they make, and there is an incentive bonus for interviews that are generated from their calling process. Naturally, we can't afford to have them calling ad nauseam to a company where there is no interest, so there are some limitations as to how far we will go with a target that is not responding to our inquiries.
On the matter of IM integration and economics related to use of recruiters, I would suggest an email to Fred directly as he can speak to this far better than I can.
Re Tory's program, he is wise enough to know what he really wants to concentrate on, and that is development of the products, marketing the concepts as company spokesman as well as being one of the "branded" characters involved. He knows how important putting together a smart business model is, but does not want to be consumed with all the details that will take. His concern, therefore, is trust in anyone he does not know. Teamwork is critical for him, for Kris, and for whomever they work with. I think you would make a great member of that team, but the choice is up to them, as is the timing! Thanks again for your willingness to explore the possibilities!

HO:
There remains more work to be done before this can be used. Including present the business model for IM to Fred and company. I need more time to finish the model but wanted to give you something to comment on as I continue the my efforts. Does this script make sense for piquing enough interest for a recruiter to contact SCC or myself?
Another concurrent effort is to finalizing the discovery questions I would use to qualify myself and the opportunity (e.g., What results would you want by when? Do you use KRI's and KPI's, Is there a current strategy to follow towards these results?, etc). These will influence the script to some degree too. By the way, I'll need to contact Troy or Kris with some of these same questions to provide advise beyond generalities. Do they know you've asked for such advise? If so, how best to contact them?
WT:
Regarding the script, it would depend on who is doing the calling. If you are thinking that this is something our callers would deliver, it is way too long. They have perhaps 20 seconds to gain some attention after which they want to get the contact to speak with you directly so that you are "selling" the value proposition, not the caller. Your questions are very appropriate, but they are questions that you will want to ask as you follow up on the initial presentation of your information to the target companies. The caller's script might be something as simple as this:
"We do not expect your company to have an interim executive need at this time that fits with Howard's background. However, Howard has generated over $100 million in revenues for new and developing companies through
identification and delivery of product and market innovations,
leveraging of technology and other resources to achieve business solutions, and
implementation of key process improvements.
As such, we believe a brief conversation with Howard could be of significant value to you. When might we have him/her get in touch with you to set up a brief introduction to go through his credentials?"
Much more than that and the caller will probably not get past first base. Keep in mind that the people we use are professional B2B telemarketers who have a lot of experience in this sort of work. We like to give them the core message, then see what they need to do to apply it in each situation. If we find that we are not getting the response we expect, we can always try a different tact.
As far as speaking with Tory (not Troy), I appreciate your interest. Tory and Kris have put a huge amount of time into this project and have very little in the way of resources to pay for professional advice. So if you want to help, it is greatly appreciated, but you need to be aware of the economic realities and only help to the extent that you feel comfortable. As they move forward I think they will, of necessity, have to have someone working closely with them to develop the business management side of this endeavor. With proper capitalization, they can engage the help they need, be it you or someone else. The best way to connect with Tory is to email him at sciencegroove@hotmail.com and find out when he might have some time available to talk.
Thanks, Howard!

Met with Howard to review his trip and reflect on the next step in his campaign. We discussed interim executive management as a possible piece of additional business that SCC could incorporate into its portfolio of deliverables; Howard will put together some ideas on this and we will go from there.
As for his own campaign, he as some minor changes that need to be made to the resume and folio, and we talked about approach strategies to the market and what that market should be (VCs, equity capital sources, etc. along with specially chosen targets). As this becomes more clarified we will move to initiating a calling campaign based on an approach that might look something like this:
I am with Stewart, Cooper and Coon, and am representing Howard Adams. Mr. Adams is an interim CEO who has generated over $100 million/year sales for new business ventures, increased revenues 300% for existing operations, negotiated over $80 million in contracts, while cutting operating expenses 53%.
Mr. Adams has recently sold off his interest in a company that he built and is looking to identify opportunities to replace this venture where he can provide interim leadership for companies in need of a top-level corporate operator and strategist. His objective, it should be made clear, is the development or repositioning of a company for success, then once a predetermined performance outcome has been achieved, turning ongoing operations over to permanent leadership which he can help to identify.
While Mr. Adams does not expect you to have a specific need at this time, we felt that an introduction to, and brief conversation with him could be of significant economic value to you. There is no cost or obligation to your company for this conversation.
[Request to set up a short 10-15 minute phone call between Mr. Adams and the contact person so that Howard can better describe his accomplishments and qualifications.]
I sent this to Howard for his review and consideration.

I appreciate your extra effort in getting together. Wednesday, the 3rd, in the morning works for me. I can even make it earlier if that suits your schedule better.
Just let me know exactly when and where.
WT:
Let's meet at the Arizona Pioneer History Museum Restaurant, located off of Pioneer Road and I-17 about 15 minutes north of the Loop 101 on the I-17. They serve a pretty good basic breakfast and it usually is relatively quiet. As you come North on the I-17, get off on the Pioneer Road exit, turn left, cross the highway and follow the road around to the museum entrance sign on your right. Turn right there and the restaurant is towards the left side of the complex as you enter.
Let me know if this will work for you. 9 am works for me; I have to be back at my home office for a call at 11.

While its been so long, it seems to have gone by so fast.
We made it back from SE Asia. The trip was a real learning adventure that included time for Tammy and I to work out future. I've procrastinated in contacting you immediately due to getting caught-up. I had many leads I had to reconcile not to mention just getting caught up on the personal car, bills, job postings and such.
Would you be available for a lunch by your house to provide your insight on moving forward before I contact Erin, Cindy and company? I'm continuing down the path for Interim Management (IM) and will need a couple of sentence changes in the resume. However, I am not sure how IM should/will relate to SCC and recruiting. I figure its best to discuss the changes before moving forward.
How are things going and has there been any improvement in caring for the family? I thought of you when Tammy received word while on our trip that her mom was to have her third round of Chemo (i.e., requiring attention). We realized we need to figure out how to care for her on a more constant basis.
Cheers,
Howard
WT:
Welcome back, Howard! I'm glad to hear that the trip went well and that you made it back in one piece! Getting together is a good plan to review a re-start on the process. We have changed our calling process a bit and I will need to go over that with you.
Lunch sounds great! It is just a matter of finding time to get out from behind my desk to go someplace, even locally! Monday or Thursday next week might work so long as we meet on the North side of town so that I can get back to my office in time for my next client. See if either of those work for you; if not, I'll keep looking!

Thank you for the consideration.
I just got back from the long biz trip through LA, San Fran then Mx and will digest this opportunity in full today. My gut and immediate research say that this wouldn't be a good fit while the analyst in me says why not?
A few considerations:
I have put integrity back into a company (i.e., move it towards SOX compliance) but I have not taken a company public. Would you still be comfortable referring them to me or do they require previous experience?
Do you have any information on Nextone' expectations (e.g., why do the IPO, when to go public, understanding how being a public company affects them, ect) and what resources they have to work on the IPO (e.g., those beyond supporting ongoing business, legal, marketing, ect)? I'm just asking what you know with the understanding it is my job to derive this information from my own research and interviews.
How will my leaving next Tuesday for SE Asia affect this opportunity?
One other bit of gratitude, mentioning SOX. It completely slipped my mind as a key motivator for using Interim Management (IM). What better way for a business to address the issues and liabilities for complying with SOX than hiring an independent executive? Much like the Y2K issue demanded independent assessments and efforts to insure business continues despite the effects associated with Y2K.

WT:
This is, I believe, one of those instances where I know you could make a good argument for what you CAN bring to the table, but I'm thinking that what you lack in the obvious areas probably would not get you an interview in terms of the job as it was explained to me. What I might suggest, as your time allows, is a conversation with the person who provided the lead. He will know more (probably not enough to answer all your questions about the company's motivations) and, if he feels that it might be reasonable, could refer you to the company CEO for an information meeting on these subjects.
If that is of interest, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
As for your travel, so long as you communicate your availability then it is not your concern but the other person's.

I was advised by a client of a CEO position that has to be filled for Nextone Communications. The are looking for someone with not only CEO experience but someone who has dealt with IPOs and with SOX related to public companies. I can't tell from your information if either or both of these would apply. The Nextone situation is, alas, another turnaround deal, but I figured it is at least worth asking about. Let me know if you are interested and I will forward your information to my client that has the connection.

Reviewed current situation. Howard has discovered an emerging niche in the interim executive staffing world, something that is prevalent in Europe but is illdefined here in the US. As "interim CEO" was a role he was seeking, he sees now the possibilities of developing the market segment, redefining what it means to the business world and building a business model around it. Recruiters, VCs, and other executive services companies will be excellent sources for marketing the concept once the concept has been better developed which is what Howard is now doing. He is also having discussions with HR people (Bill Beyerl?) to determine what their hot buttons are with regard to use of an interim executive, and will use that information to define the product more completely before we get into developing communications strategies for the various market segments.
As such, I will advise Erin and Dena/Lisa of the strategy which will take 10 weeks or so to put together before we can re-engage call placement with this new approach and the right kinds of targets.

I was traveling on business most of yesterday. I responded to Erin stating I'd get more companies to her later today. I think a meeting next Tuesday would be beneficial, are you available? If so, at what time?
After testing the immediate network it seems that Interim CEO may need to be changed (regardless of cost) due to the effect it has on clients. Interim Management seems to invoke much more interest. We can discuss this and a few other tasks on Tuesday.
My response:
I have a client coming into Phoenix that will tie up my morning, but I should be back at my home office by 2 pm PT if that would work for you. Let me know and I'll put it on my calendar.

Both. While he is not looking for the "traditional" job, I think being posted to the executive boards might bring him in contact with opportunities that might convert into consulting / interim contracts that would be a good match.

Ok Bill, I will post him to executive boards only and then once he is posted the two of you can review the other boards together and decide whether any of those may be beneficial. sound good.

Are you recommending I join The Vault and use as a search site or just asking me to comment on the opportunities sent to you?
If the later, here is my quick analysis on the only positions with potential:
Cool Ops- cool meaning small potential to land that particular job or company due to foreseeable challenges such as expecting long term employee, relocation required, ect. However, still good networking opportunity due to line of business.
MCG Capital, VP of Biz Development
Equinix , Strategic Biz Ops Manager
Warm Ops- same as cool except the particular job or jobs they have available could be a good fit.
USC Consulting, Biz Development Executive- the interest stems in USC's approach and philosophy. They do a feasibility study to insure the results can be measured and accomplished then take it through implementation (verse standard consultants that leave the implementation to the client). They also are not focused on vogue solutions but viable solutions depending upon the clients circumstances. Great potential for working for/working with/through them and receiving the satisfaction of achieving results as I would in an Interim Executive Position.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thank you
My response:
My intent is to expose you to a variety of "channels" that you may or may not be aware of as they cross my desk. I saw this come up with relation to consulting opportunities and felt that it would be worth investigating; I don't know enough about the company to speak to the quality of their leads (although I have never heard anything negative about them).
On the subject of passing things along, for the heck of it I did a search in LexusNews using "interim CEO" for the key word search. The attached document has all the hits from that search just for the last month. My suggestion is to scan for things that might be indicators of potential target companies for your services, or for trend indicators that might lead to potential opportunities. It is a lot to look at, so don't get too analytical right off the bat!

From Kennard:
The following some companies I came up with by just typing "interim executives", "interim executive management" and "interim management" in the search engines (I didn't have any success in idEXEC). "Interim Management" appears to provide the most information:
Deer Park Group, Inc.: www.deerparkinn.com
iCEO: http://www.iceo.net
Cairn Executive LLC: www.cairnexecutive.com
Leaders For Today Interim Force: http://www.leadersfortoday.com
B. E. Smith: http://www.besmith.com
CEC Energy Consultants: http://www.cecenergyconsultants.com/services/interimEM.asp
CFOs2GO.com: www.cfos2go.com
Schafer Consulting: www.schaferconsulting.com
Executive Smarts: http://executivesmarts.com/Home_Page.html
CHR Solutions: http://www.chrsolutions.com/BusinessConsulting/InterimExecutiveManagement.html
Albemarle: www.albemarleinterim.com
Willmark Associates: www.willmarkassociates.com
This will require some time to research all of the companies on Google-quite a few organizations are from the UK and I am trying to only include U.S. interim organizations.
Sincerely,
My response:
OK.. that makes sense. Just for fun, I went to IDExec and did a search in the LexusNews section for "interim CEO" and came up with over 800 articles in the last month. Downloaded these to a Word doc and will send them along to Howard as a way to identify potential targets for conversation. We'll see where this leads - perhaps some of the companies identified in the articles can be listed then we can search them by name for the calling program.
I'll keep you posted. Thanks for your help!
From Kennard:
Looks like "Interim CEO" pulls a lot of companies in Google.

Are you looking at this week? I am free until 2:30 eastern on Friday and most of the day on Thursday as well.
My response:
Because of my schedule, I would like you to connect with Howard directly this week if that's OK with you. If we need to do a three-way call, then let's shoot for my regular meeting with Howard next Tuesday at 11 am PT.
Let me know.
From Erin:
Absolutely. I see his webfolio is loaded. Is he all set to start calling as well?
My reply:
Yes he is, though identifying additional companies will be something we have to work on constantly due to the nature of his campaign.

Update with Howard on launch timing. Ready to move forward on all fronts. So...
Will will contact Cindy and Dena and get the campaign launched from P&D and Call Placement standpoint.
Going forward, will use our time to review activities and identify problem areas and how to overcome them.
Sent following to Cindy, Dena, and Kennard:
We are ready to move Howard into the posting and distribution process and get his calling campaign under way with a CPOC call.
Cindy... on the recruiter distribution process, please be sure to include the Top 40 as what Howard is doing is not really seeking a job.. more seeking consultative turn around, or interim CEO situations that might come across the desks of the top recruiting organizations. Once the initial distribution has been made, Howard and I will set up a regular review and revisit process to keep his information fresh in their systems.
Dena... on the call placement front, this will be a different sort of animal as we truly are not looking to find an open position in a company, but to introduce Howard as the strategist that he is in order to raise a company's awareness of the work that he does so that over time and Howard's ongoing contact with the company, opportunities will surface that he might not have identified otherwise.
Kennard...
This may not be possible, but worth asking: can you please see if you find the right NAICS code for companies / organizations that provide "interim" executives? Perhaps using "interim" as part of a key word search would work. I want to see if we can identify a lot more of these types of companies for the calling program to target. An example of such a company would be ForteCEO Group - Interim Executives for Permanent Solutions.
Thank you all! Howard is excited to work with the team and I think you will find him an excellent participant and desirous of open communications throughout the process.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

From Howard:
If possible a short conversation for tomorrow's meeting (11am, w/ you calling 480-491-6816) would be appreciated. I've spoken with my team and updated enough to move forward but want to set a date to launch the next steps, preferably May 21. Let me know if you are available for our meeting tomorrow.
F.Y.I.............we'll need to update our Chaosity material in two stages, one which is done simply reflects the work we've done together. Stage two will update the look, feel and expand the materials in the coming months. One side question, do feel the attached business cards are in line with our current strategy (the look, feel, by-line, etc)?
Hope you had a great weekend and to hear from you soon
My response:
Tomorrow's call is on at 11 am. Talk to you then.
Regarding the business card, the only change I would make is under your name. If you are going to say "Interim Executive" then "strategic planning" should be "Strategic Planner" as they both seem to be intended as titles.
Talk to you tomorrow.

Howard and I need to discuss his "launch" timing as he has some things he is involved in that he wants to wrap up first. I will advise the team when it is time to get the calling campaign and the P&D process underway.
Thanks, Julie. Let me know if you have any questions.
Sent the following response to Howard:
Thank you! I have forwarded them along to Julie to have the folio converted to html and uploaded and will let you know when it goes live. I have advised Julie not to notify other team members but to wait until I give the go ahead based on your timing, which we can discuss when we speak shortly.

I didn't sign the Release form figuring these changes might have an effect. And, want to discuss the timing for releasing things in tomorrow's meeting. I need some time to finish a few related tasks before I'm ready to release things onto the market.

My response with revisions and new release:
Here is the folio with revisions included, renamed, and a new release with the new file name for the folio. We can time the "launch" to line up with what works best for you. Getting the folio "live" will not launch the other processes unless we say so. We can review tomorrow. Talk to you then.

Sent revised folio to Howard for review with the following:
Kierstin and I have been playing with your folio edits to make them conform a bit more to the folio style we want. Please review to make sure we did not change the meaning of the stories in the process. The writing style may seem a bit stilted as we try to elminate all personal pronouns and as many other pronouns as possible, but this actually make a "fast" read on line easier. Let me know if you have any questions, or if you are good with the changes that will allow me to move this forward.
Thanks, Howard!
From Howard:
I looks good to me. My only question is regarding the word c-level, should the 'c' be capitalized? If so, see the paragraph under the first Job (Chaosity LLC) to change this.
Made capitalization change and forwarded folio to Kierstin with the following:
The folio is good to go. The only change was from "c-level" to "C-level" (top of page 9) and is marked with track changes. Let's move this forward.
Thanks!

Just a thought, if he wants it this way, how about leaving it?

I did not find rewriting the stories to eliminate first person pronouns too difficult. In the process, there were some revisions that I made to make the stories easier to read. See what you think.

Just to follow through on some of this:
1) the client has added a lot of first person to his stories, that is not SC&C standard so I will be changing that upon getting the ok from you (maybe you just want me to accept the changes and get this to standard and give you another quick once-over?)
2) there are now 13 share stories, I can leave the extra story in, just wanted to make sure that you wanted 13 (but just this once )
3) If there are resume revisions as well, did that get sent to the resume writer?
Fabulous, thanks!
I will finish this up as soon as I hear back from you.
My response:
Thanks for getting back to me. Do make the stories conforming. Howard was more concerned with making sure that the impression of the stories reinforced what we have been discussing.
As a Chairman's Club guy, I think we can let one extra story slip in. I did not realize that was the case.. when I looked - too quickly it seems - I thought he had simply replaced one with a better story.
I did not send the resume changes back to the writer. Thanks for the reminder... I will take care of that step. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks, Kierstin!

From Kierstin re folio (with draft copy):
I am really struggling with this folio. The share stories feel all over the place and I am afraid that I might be missing the boat as far as placing this client in the light that he would like to be seen in. Could you do a quick once-over of what I have to date? I feel that a lot of the stories are unfinished as there is not much quantifiable data for me to use. As this client is Chairman's Club, and will be visiting the office next week, I want to make sure that he is getting his money's worth from my end.
Thanks,
My response with cc to Fred:
Thanks for sending this along. Howard's situation is different from a lot of clients, and you are right that trying to capture the right tone for him is a challenge. Keep in mind that Howard is a strategist first and foremost, so most of the stories he speaks to, while they may speak to something as specific as buying a company boat, really need to emphasize the strategic, higher-order thinking that he is employing that use the situation as an opportunity to improve the performance of the company through its systems and people.
I made some edits to the folio that I think might help. There is a tendency by a lot of writers to use more words that add very little to the substance. That also translates into the use of words that seem to be "out of context" to the objective of the paragraph. I did not try to edit everything, but to play with a few to give you a sense of what I mean. Please let me know if you have any questions on this.
Thanks, Kierstin!

I am just wondering if you have some idea how you would like this bio to be included in the webfolio. As it contains information from the resume (some work history) that may be redundant. Would you, perhaps, like for the first few paragraphs to be used as either the summary section or value statements?
I will be working on this today so you can let me know at any time.
My response:
Kierstin... for the moment, proceed with the folio as you would any other... my only suggestion is that from the "bio" you might gather some of the tone that we want to express. Let me know if you have any other questions.

From Howard with "final" resume and cover letter:
Here are the final revisions for the resume and cover letter. Though my dyslexia and poor keyboard habits are sure to require some review ;>)
As to the cover letter, most should go out wit some immediate connection to the company. Obviously, mentioning a contact/referral if one was involved. The attached shows the opening as if there was no contact but a bit of research had been done before contacting the company. Should SCC not be able to do research to obtain the opening item then perhaps the following paragraph would suffice:
Challenged at discovering a person with that unique balance of developing strategy backed by operational leadership to realize your short-term and long-range results? If so, my experience and enthusiasm for developing and improving your business should be a good match. People appreciate my ability to think through alternatives then provide those involved with an understanding of not only how but why the challenges will be addressed. Then lead the efforts to realize the agreed upon results.
Let me know what else you require beyond preparing for the interviews and target job spreadsheet I'll get to you next.
My response:
Attached is my take on the cover letter, incorporating your thoughts in the opening paragraph. I wholeheartedly agree that the letter will be modified based on its use, its "hook" and its audience. The purpose of the primary cover letter is to provide a good overview that can be used by call placement that can then also be modified to meet specific objectives that you and I will identify as we move forward.
Take a look at this and let me know if you think it will work in the general vs the specific.
Thanks!
Howard's response:
Yes, this looks good for the general cover letter . Thank you!
P.S. The Chapter 3 of your books is proving to be just what I was looking for.
My reply:
I will forward these documents on to the team for proofing and preparation of the folio draft. I will then review where we are and refresh your assignments so that we don't loose opportunities between now and next week's Phoenix visit.

From Howard:
Do we need to adjust the Job History in the campaign work sheet to match the new resume?
I was trying to finalize the accomplishments and ties backs to SHARE Stories as we discussed. Being these relate to Jobs too I wasn't sure if we need to change the job history to reflect the consolidation of my short experiences with MCI Systemhouse and Productivity Solutions into independent consulting as well as condensing my The Coastal Group Penasco work into Chaosity.
Let me know and I'll finish up the final adjustments to the campaign worksheet.
My response:
I think it's OK to leave these companies/positions broken out; what will show up in the folio in terms of the job history is what we finalize in the resume job history section. The rest of the folio is not chronologically driven so it won't make any difference to the writers. The stories in the folio tie to achievements, true, but the achievements tie back to competencies, not necessarily or when you did them.
I hope that answered your question.

My response (with draft "bio"):
Thanks, Howard. I have attached my idea of a "Bio" or Third-party Profile for your thoughts and comments. We can reduce this to one page, most likely, by job history and simply moving the key achievements forward, OR by creating a quote page where we have a summary, and then a series of quotes of what others have said about your work. Update with Lakeshore Group - through Q&A with them, Howard was able to really discern where they are and not at all sure where they want to go with it.
Discussed the resume development process. The resume as presented, while very much "by the book" does not capture the innovation of what Howard wants to bring to the table. As such, I will redraft the top portion to verbalize my vision for him while he works on the bottom to clarify those historical things that need to be emphasized in greater detail. I will also see what I can come up with in the way of a "Exec Bio" for his use as a one-page marketing piece. Hopefully between the two of us, we will merge our ideas together and come up with a new marketing strategy that will exceed expectations.

The attached is a reflection of what I was working on before hiring SCC. I'd like to discuss using this format in place of the classic format while still having the classical format available on the web portfolio site. In today's world, fitting in won' get you where you need to be and I don't care to work for a company that just fits in an industry. This was evident in my networking and consulting done in Chicago.

From Howard:
The attached is the initial examples of companies to aid in defining the job search. I visited www.greatplacetowork.com to obtain many of my examples. This was to enable me to quickly determine those companies that focus on creating results through others. Specifically their executives, employees, and strategic partnerships (which includes clients!). Their culture believes in sustaining growth through good decision-making, education, support and leadership.
Considering many charities and philanthropy organizations are not listed within Hoovers, Nexus/Lexus, etc....two good places to review for philanthropy are www.charitynavigator.com and www.philanthropy.com.
The final section condenses retail/services/finance and real estate into a single group. These are all examples of where my business knowledge, management skills and experience as a 'C' level executive can be put to good use. I provided three large company examples which have local presence in Phoenix and the remainder of companies I've read about and how they face challenges with their growth. Other potential companies would be those facing cash flow challenges. With Hoovers limited access I could not access income statements and balance sheets to identify such companies.
As to today's meeting, being in Chicago I can only be contacted via my cell phone (or email), 602-625-2259. I have not answered the interview question you provided and won't by today's meeting. I'd like to work the rest of the day on revising the accomplishment/core competencies issues we identified last week. Then move onto the interview questions.
I'll be waiting for your call or email deferring our meeting until Friday, your choice. I have plenty of networking while in Chicago and other work to do by Friday.
My response:
I sent you the draft resume for your review and initial edits. I have take the list of companies you sent to me and have forwarded it to the research team to get full reports on the companies. I have asked that they pull HQ information initially, as I think for the work that you do, we may have to start there and work backwards to the local operations of some companies.
Due to your travel, I think it best that we reconnect on Friday to give you time to get the assignments done and to have a chance to review the resume (and cover letter which will be forthcoming as well). If you do have something specific to talk about, please give me a call at 623-748-3699 or my cell: 619-997-1178.
Thanks, Howard. Have a productive trip!

Introduced Howard to Stress Questions and Commonly Asked Questions and gave him his assignments on these topics.
Went over the targeting strategies. He has compiled a pretty good initial list - just wants to add more on the retail side - and will get a "why company/why me" statement going for our discussion next week. We will tentatively shoot for a REM call next Friday.

Sent the following to Sandra Lim re writing assignment:
Your assigned client, Howard Adams, has been informed that he may expect a resume and cover letter draft back within 4 business days from this date. If, for any reason, you cannot accept this client, immediately notify Michelle Settle at the following address:
(msettle@stewartcoopercoon.com)
By doing this quickly, she can re-assign this client to another writer. Your earliest notification of Michelle will still allow the other writer enough time to produce a quality document and meet client expectations.
If you accept this assignment, please review the campaign strategy section and let me know if you have any questions about the client's position for the resume.
Thank you!

From Howard:
I'd appreciate you providing me with the report you've run before revealing my current personal history (specifically job history, achievements and SHARE stories). I have more to do with the achievements for TCGP but should get them done before tomorrow meeting.
I have scheduled the 26th and 27th as our time in Phoenix and will wait for confirmation form you later.
One question, my wife just got off the phone with a client who is basically firing his COO and trying to secure her services to aid in his rebuilding of the company. (i.e., consulting on turning the company around). While she can provide specific facilitation service he is in need of service I can provide. Should I pursue this as a temporary assignment? I'm not interested in it as a permanent job but could do my classical management consulting as a part time venture........depending on your assessment of what i to come in finding a permanent job. Worse case, would it not be wise to network by visiting him a the conference my wife is presenting at? Another benefit is that the conference is the series I used to speak at regularly so visiting old friends to open the networking back up and seeing her speak for a first time sounds good.
My response:
Here you go, Howard.
Regarding the possible consulting opportunity, my concern is not about taking a temporary assignment (which can be a very good thing depending on the level of commitment) it is the approach to the company. I would be careful not to assume that he needs you - though you may think so. I believe the best approach is for your wife to have a discussion about the company's needs, determine what areas she can support and what areas she would refer out then get the owner's agreement to meet with you to discuss what you might be able to do for him. In other words, the owner needs to admit that the need exists or that at least there is a reason for a conversation before you enter the scene. If this has already taken place, then go ahead and explore the possibilities and you and I can then determine how viable it is once a contract is extended.
I hope that made sense. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

From Howard (with attachment):
As Tammy and I continue to refine the Job History, Accomplishments and SHARE stories we would take a break and work on the question, tell me something about yourself (i.e., campaign strategy you drafted). The attached is our latest outcome. I figured it would help you prepare for our next meeting. Meanwhile, we'll finish up on the reminder of the worksheets.
One request, can you run another print of my personal information after 5pm today? That would allow us to review and revise our work before tomorrow's meeting.
Thank you and talk to you soon.
My response:
Excellent, Howard (and Tammy, your input is terrific and very helpful - thank you!). I will review the campaign strategy comments for our call tomorrow. Please remind me later today when you are ready to have the worksheets sent along; I don't want to pull them until I know you are ready for them.
Also, I am shooting for our 2-day Phoenix visit to fall on the 26th and 27th of April. We should have everything in place by then to make that visit as valuable as possible. I will get an agenda to you as we get closer to that date. Let me know if there will be any problem with the dates.
Thanks!

Reviewed the final stages of developing the worksheets; nearly there. Put together an initial campaign strategy for review again next week as we get closer to moving the information to the writers.
Reviewed expectations regarding company targeting. I sent a list of recruiters for his use in developing targets in that arena as well as sending him the link for 6-Figures Equity Funding network group. Tuesday we will try to get the industry targets identified, develop some initial WHY statements, and get more into the interview preparation process as me move forward toward his two day Phoenix visit.
I will check with Gwen as to available times in April for his visit as his schedule is pretty open.

From Howard:
My wife and I are still dumping achievements and have started to refine them (quantify and coordinate with SHARE stories). We've updated a few other areas and that about it. Having no questions for you and appreciating your time with others I wanted to give you the opportunity to forgo our meeting until our regularly schedule Friday at 11am. Your choice. Considering your and my time, I figure it won't be until next Tuesday that you'll give your blessing to release the materials to the team but will shoot for our desired target of this Friday.
One issue is that I wrote to the webmaster to see they could print or give me a program to print what we've input. As mentioned before, this would be beneficial for some clients and should be easy considering what you provided the last time I requested this (Thank). I've even reverted to writing everything into a word doc before I input the data into the system so I can review things more easily. I guess this is just an example of that strategic<->analysis competency I tend to really on ;>)
I'll be at my desk all day so call if you wish 480-491-6816, otherwise enjoy your time and we'll talk Friday.
My response (with copy of worksheet file data):
Let's wait until Friday then to review everything. Here is a dump of what you have entered so far. I can provide this to you at any time. Talk to you Friday!

From Howard re today's call:
No surprise, I am in Mexico trying to close the business. We're down to the final division of assets including A/R, A/P and cash which is ending up a real challenge (perhaps a new achievement!). I've had to separate the partners and facilitate each partner separately yesterday. Today I need to facilitate them as a group to conclude our business this morning at 8am.
I understand that next Tuesday's meeting is tentative as far as date and time due to your other client(s).meetings. This is no problem for me because I can be rescheduled any time except at 4pm on Thursday. Just let me know with a few hours notice. I don't see these events delaying our intended deadlines for this month.
Best of luck on the busy coming week.
My response:
Thanks for the email, Howard. And thanks for the good wishes. I enjoy the time I get to spend with clients in town so while my scheduling takes a bit of a beating, it is well worth it. How would 10 am PT on Wednesday, 3/28, work for you? If that's a go, let me know and I'll put it on my calendar.
Thanks!
Howard's response:
Thank you. We got through the breakup of the old company successfully so the only remaining tasks are minor paperwork over the next couple of months. This can easily be handled at my convenience instead of these last minute mutli-day sessions.
I've changed our next meeting to Wed. at 10am (PT/AZ) and look forward to continuing the progress. Talk to you soon.

From Howard:
My apology for my being unable to attend today's 11am meeting. Would you prefer to discuss my progress late tomorrow or just wait until our next meeting on Tuesday?
I need to moderate the final settlement between my two ex-partners to distribute its assets and cash. They are at each others throats to the point I need to give it my full attention for a few days. Yesterday we sold the last major asset (land) and are expected to receive our cash today. This is critical to myself so that I have funds to cover my expenses throughout the months ahead................so it does relate to the task at hand in some way ;>)
I'll check my email randomly over the next few days.
My response:
No problem, Howard. My day is pretty packed, so if you don't mind, let's pick it up next week.
Thanks, Howard!

Reviewed progress on worksheets; spent most time on core competencies as the defining of his "product" is going to be the big challenge. Once these are defined more clearly, then Howard can move forward to wrapping the achievements and stories around them.
Also reviewed efforts on Disciplines and Industries, expanding in some areas and contracting in others. Not a high priority, but making good headway nonetheless.
Sent NAICS codes to Howard for his use in identifying more specific industry segments.

Completed orientation call with Howard and Jerry. Went over expectations and rough scheduling (Howard is wrapping up current business operations and should be totally free by 3/1) for our first meeting in Phoenix. We are shooting for the week of 3/5 but I will need to confirm the available dates.
Went over the worksheets and initial assignments that Howard as started working on. Once we have a good deal of the information in the system, our discussion will be of greater value because we can fine tune what has been entered rather than try to build it from scratch.

From Howard re call:
Jerry has indicated that the Orientation call will be this Wednesday at 10am and was kind enough to follow-up on your initial email. Apparently it had been directed to my Junk mail folder for various reasons including the large 4mb suspected file. I've taken the measure to prevent this from happening from you and will flag other emails containing any words which appear to have anything to do with future correspondences from potential employers (not to mention taking more caution at reviewing the 150+ suspected emails I get daily).
I had no problem renaming the attachment to allow me to extract its contents. I received my userid and password from Gwen and I will pursue your requests to prepare for the Orientation.
I look forward to meeting and working with you.
Talk to you soon and Thank you.
My response:
Thanks, Howard. Even when I set my screening parameters, things still end up in the delete folder that should not be there. So much for technology!
Jerry provided me with a work phone and a cell phone. Which should I use for our call on Wednesday?
Thanks! Talk to you then.

Sent following welcome to Howard:
It is my pleasure to welcome you to SC&C and to be working with you in the weeks to come. I will be coordinating with Jerry to schedule an orientation call with you to go over expectations, objectives, and time frames. Jerry will be in touch with you to determine the times that are available for us to meet for this three-way call.
In preparation for that call, I am attaching a zip file with a lot of information that we will be accessing during the campaign process. You don't need to do anything with it at this time other than to make sure you can open the zip file and can access the documents enclosed. If you have any problem with this, please let me know.
In addition, before our call, please visit your SCC profile pages (the link and password information was sent in your first welcome letter) and review the information there. Please bookmark this site as you will be visiting it frequently.
Please review the following Personal Profile areas:
Resources (in the center of the page): please take a look at the Top Eschelon (TE) link; throughout your campaign, periodically look there for possible openings that fit with your expertise. Should you find anything of interest, let me know and we will get our TE representative to check it out for you.
Also under Resources is a link to Hoovers free site. Take a look around there; we will be getting into the targeting process later, but you might want to get comfortable with the site in advance. FYI, our research team will be pulling the full reports on companies; the free site helps to define what the proper targets should be.
Under "Your Profile" on the left, please note:
Campaign Tasks section - all of our objectives are defined there and will move above the line as we progress through the process; it is a good place to track where we are
Target Company section - blank now, but will have all your target companies listed and give you access to all the calling efforts of the call placement team on these companies
Campaign Worksheets - Take a look at these; we will discuss them and your initial assignments during our orientation call.
Resume section - will ultimately have all your prepared documents (resume, cover letter) posted for easy access to you wherever you may be
Staff Notes - you can go to this section and see what is happening on your campaign; I will post our conversations and your assignments there as well as track our emails so that we always have a point of reference as we move forward.
Client Information - PLEASE check this information for accuracy as it will be used when creating your materials. Should anything change during the process, please make sure you change the information here.
Under Resources in the center of the screen, take a look at the Job Search Briefcase. There are a lot of materials there that you can use during your campaign in addition to the materials included in the attached zip file. Also, note the links to Job Boards, State Boards, and Diversity Boards, and to Trade Magazines and Newspapers. All of these links will become important later in the process.
I look forward to meeting you, ----, if only virtually for the moment and to helping you define and achieve your personal career objectives.
Talk to you soon.

we do not have an interest in pursuing his candidacy. In addition, any
future correspondence by your firm should be directed to my attention and
not Terri Makins of our Quantitative Equity Group.
